Professor Ian Shapiro introduces the class “Power and Politics in Today’s World.”
This course provides an examination of political dynamics and institutions over this past tumultuous quarter century, and the implications of these changes for what comes next. Among the topics covered are the decline of trade unions and enlarged role of business as political forces, changing attitudes towards parties and other political institutions amidst the growth of inequality and middle-class insecurity, the emergence of new forms of authoritarianism, and the character and durability of the unipolar international order that replaced the Cold War.

Donald Trump's new education agenda: conservative values over critical thinking. The changes will restrict diverse perspectives, suppress important discussions, undermine academic freedom — and yes, fire teachers like on 'The Apprentice.'

President-elect Donald Trump defeated the Democrats roundly with his argument that the United States needed a major shakeup. This election will go down in history as a “realigning election,” argues historian Geoff Kabaservice, director of policy studies at the Niskanen Center in Washington, DC.

Kabaservice tells host Steve Clemons that Americans are turning their back on “the establishment” from top to bottom: the media, bureaucracy, elite universities and celebrity culture. So does this mean the end of the “Washington consensus,” where both parties agreed on almost everything: trade, alliances, immigration, etc? Will Trumpism define the US for years to come?

Two special elections in Florida on Tuesday could affect the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives. Republicans currently hold a 218-213 majority.
Both special elections are in districts that Republican lawmakers vacated and where Republicans outnumber Democrats by a 2-1 margin.
Democrats spent large amounts of money to try to flip the seats, and that financial advantage has some Republicans worried about Tuesday’s outcome.

Democracy for Sale | ENDEVR Documentary

Watch 'Who Rules America? ' here: https://youtu.be/swovERCu7n4

In America, lobby groups, corporations, and billionaires invest millions of dollars to ensure that the ‘right’ candidate wins elections. It affects everything from the selection of local officials to presidential elections and creates countless conflicts of interest, undermining what used to be a model democracy. And it has a serious impact on people’s daily lives. Drug prices are the highest in the world. Tax rates for the wealthy have fallen. Climate change is being denied. The impunity and extent of this are staggering. For many, this is nothing less than “legal corruption”.

Today, America “is just an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery”, said former president Jimmy Carter himself. Rules seem to have been designed to be bypassed; supposedly impartial judges are elected with the help of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars. We follow candidates on the field during the electoral process and hear from people whose lives have been directly affected.
