Contrary to popular assumptions, it appears that younger Europeans are getting more rightwing than previous generations, with many expecting to vote for far right parties in upcoming elections. So what exactly is motivating this shift in Gen-Z politics?

Multi-party systems are confusing, so here's a quick guide to the main political parties in European politics.
For Americans it can be especially challenging to understand European politics, as they're so used to the Democrats and Republicans dominating the scene. Hopefully this explains the basics well enough, so you can get started on your deep dive into whatever political topic you want to research.
Note: This is obviously just a super short introduction and is based more on stereotypes than on any actual party. The continent is far too big and politics far too diverse to cover in one video. Also: The colors and names of the parties sadly don't always match up with their real life counterparts. Sorry. That's life.

Exit polls had begun to roll in at the end of European elections across the EUโs 27 countries, when President Emmanuel Macron delivered his bombshell moment in a televised address to a stunned French population.
โIโve decided to hand you back the choice of our parliamentary future with a vote. I am therefore dissolving the National Assembly,โ he declared.
The National Rally party - led by Mr Macron's rivals Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella - was one of the big gains that Europeโs far-right parties had expected, and confirmation came with all the exit polls giving the party more than 30%, double that of Mr Macronโs centrist Renaissance.
But beyond France, the broader story of Europe's four-day vote marathon really belonged to the parties of the centre right.
They tightened their grip on the European Parliament, with victories in Germany and Spain, and significant advances in Hungary, against long-dominant Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The far right did not enjoy as great a surge across Europe as many had predicted.
In the Netherlands, Geert Wildersโ Freedom Party came second, while Austriaโs party of the same name came out as winners, but only narrowly.

In Stratnewsglobalโs Roundtable series, three young scholars with distinct specialisations on China, analysed and answered questions on a range of issues. Anushka Saxena, a research analyst at the Takshashila Institution in Bengaluru, says that Beijingโs perception of its foreign and domestic situation has darkened.
Xi Jinping himself is warning of โsignificant challengesโ, she pointed out, of โchanges unforseen in a centuryโ and that โopportunities for development are concurrent with great risks and challenges.โ
In other words, Chinaโs drive to boost domestic consumption and rely less on exports is not happening smoothly. The environment in the South China Sea has become hostile, and the path to technological and scientific progress is being impeded by outside forces.
The anti-corruption campaign has ensnared officials across government departments including the PLA. But the one point which stands out is Xi Jinpingโs iron control over the ship of state.
Amit Kumar, also of the Takshashila Institution, focused on the Chinese economy. ย He argues that the global economic slowdown has impacted on Chinaโs heavily export-oriented industrial base, add to that growing centralization with power being taken away from local authorities and the securitization of development.
Governmentโs crackdown on the real estate sector has compounded the problem since it contributed from 25% to 33% of GDP.ย This was done because the authorities wanted to direct capital away from speculative real estate transactions towards the innovation economy.
Suyash Desai who studies Chinaโs PLA from his base in Taiwan, is working on his Mandarin language while also writing a newsletter called the PLA Bulletin. He talked about Chinaโs efforts to intimidate Taiwan through aggressive manoeuvres at sea.
In his view, China is in no position at least for a decade, to be able to mount an invasion of the island. It lacks the capacity in terms of amphibious capability and thereโs no telling how things could go if the US intervenes in support of Taiwan.
Tune in for more in this conversation with three young China scholars.

Although Beijing has declared initial success in containing the spread of the coronavirus within its borders, questions about the political fallout for the Party and for CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping still remain. Will he emerge from the crisis with his grip on power strengthened? Or has the CCP's early mishandling of the virus empowered Xi's political rivals? Please join CSIS Freeman Chair Jude Blanchette and Claremont McKenna College political scientist Minxin Pei for a discussion of the political implications of the coronavirus outbreak.

President Xi Jinpingโs warm welcome for the Italian prime minister offers a pointed reminder to European leaders of the economic benefits of engaging with China โ and also of the potential risks. #politics #china #xijinping #meloni #italy #europe #worldnews
Italian diplomats hailed Giorgia Meloniโs five-day trip as a success after she secured a sit-down with Xi and a clutch of cooperation deals, as well as glowing reviews in Chinese state media. To pull that off, she avoided criticizing her host for supporting Russiaโs war machine or overcapacity in key tech industries, according to public statements, though did warn trade ties between Italy and China must be rebalanced.
Her reception suggests Beijing is seeking to fan tensions between European Union members with the promise of lucrative bilateral ties for some, even as the 27-nation bloc as a whole moves closer to the tougher US approach to trade with the worldโs no. 2 economy.

Over the past two decades, China has built large infrastructure projects in almost every country in Africa, making Western powers uncomfortable amid wider concerns about Beijingโs investments across the continent. However, a deeper look shows that accusations of so-called debt trap diplomacy turn out to be unfounded.

In China, controversy has erupted over a speech by President Xi Jinping that indicates he and other leaders knew about the threat of the coronavirus outbreak weeks before it was revealed to the public.

How did the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) not only survive but also regain the support of many Chinese citizens after the Tiananmen Square crackdown of 1989? Why has popular domestic sentiment turned toward anti-Western nationalism despite the anti-dictatorship democratic movements of the 1980s? Why is there a higher possibility that the new Beijing leadership will adopt a more nationalistic foreign policy in response to domestic nationalism in spite of China benefiting most from globalization?
China's one-child policy ended in 2015, but we're just beginning to understand what it was like to live under the program, says TED Fellow and documentary filmmaker Nanfu Wang. With footage from her film "One Child Nation," she shares untold stories that reveal the policy's complex consequences and expose the creeping power of propaganda.
