Journalist and commentator Brad Polumbo has expressed disappointment at American politics descending into “kindergarten” after both sides called out the presidential candidates as “weird”.

Mr Polumbo said it is “laughable” the most powerful people in America are going back and forth like children.

“It’s name-calling, juvenile insults, and it doesn’t even make sense because, let’s be honest, there are a lot of weird people in politics,” he told Sky News host Danica De Giorgio.

Donald Trump sat down with the billionaire Elon Musk for a rambling and vitriolic interview that revisited many of the former president’s most divisive talking points.

The interview on X, which Musk owns, got off to an inauspicious start, with technical issues initially preventing many users from listening. Musk blamed the delay on a 'massive' cyber-attack, but the cause of the glitch was not clear. Trump attacked migrants while consistently mocking his opponent, Kamala Harris, and lied throughout the two-hour interview. A sympathetic Musk concluded the interview by telling Trump he was 'on the right path'

The unexpected moment led to intense speculation.

Chinese state media reported that Hu Jintao "was not feeling well" during the session and was taken to a meeting room "for a rest".

US presidential candidate Donald Trump was back on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, ahead of his interview with Tesla founder Elon Musk on Monday.

Mr Musk, who became a US citizen in 2002, has said that he voted almost exclusively for Democrats for decades.

Mr Musk lifted the ban on the former president's Twitter account after buying the company.

Research by the Center for Countering Digital Hate – an organisation that Mr Musk attempted to sue in a case that was thrown out earlier this year – noted that so far this year Mr Musk has tweeted false or misleading voting claims 50 times.

European Commissioner Thierry Breton has warned Musk that X may face penalties if it doesn’t address the spread of illegal content.

For years, good relations with China guaranteed the German economy healthy profits and cheap goods. But over time, that relationship has become a dependency. The documentary "In the Jaws of the Dragon - How to Deal with China?” explores the nature and extent of this reliance.

At a summit meeting to discuss the "New Silk Road” infrastructure project in October 2023, China’s President Xi appeared alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. Whether in Asia or the Middle East - China is evidently pushing for a new world order, with offensives directed against the West. Germany is already feeling the consequences.

For a long time, trade with China flourished: From 1984, Volkswagen flooded the Chinese market with cars, ultimately exporting one in every three VWs to China. But now, Chinese companies like BYD are dominating the market with e-cars. And Germany’s reliance on China for computer chips, antibiotics and solar cells can now be seen as downright reckless. This dependence is becoming more evident as China increasingly comes up trumps both politically and economically. Whether regarding the Ukraine war, in its relations with Russia or its continued saber rattling in the conflict with Taiwan: Where China would have once conducted itself with restraint, it now demands its slice of global power. In Berlin, politicians are rubbing their eyes in disbelief: what was once a healthy relationship is now a codependency. And there’s no easy way out.

Elon Musk called Donald Trump the “path to prosperity” during an interview streamed live to X on Monday, August 12.

Footage by Margo Martin, deputy director of communications for Trump, shows the former president speaking with Elon Musk over the phone from his Mar-a-Lago estate.

“I haven’t really been active in politics before, and I’m just trying to point out that my track record historically has been moderate. If not moderate, slightly left, and so this is to people out there who are in the moderate camp to say I think you should support Donald Trump for president,” Musk can be heard saying over the phone in the footage.

The interview was delayed by more than 40 minutes due to technical difficulties, which Musk attributed to a “massive DDOS attack on X.”

From Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s to Xi Jinping today, China’s leaders have long said the country practises a unique type of socialism – “socialism with Chinese characteristics.” Framed as an adaptive, flexible socialism, it’s tailored specifically to China’s conditions and problems. Initially, the phrase meant an embrace of free markets, free enterprise and trade, to reverse the economic stagnation of the Mao Zedong years. However, current leader Xi Jinping has declared the start of a “new era”, requiring a new type of socialism with Chinese characteristics – with the clearest continuity being that the Communist Party remains large and in charge.
