Elon Musk has been made head of a new "Department of Government Efficiency" by Donald Trump, the latest appointment to the president-elect's emerging team.
Trump says the billionaire businessman will co-lead the organisation with former Republican primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
The department will "provide advice and guidance from outside of government" to "dismantle government bureaucracy" and cut spending. But it is not yet fully clear what form it will take.
Trump has also picked Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth to be defence secretary, and John Ratcliffe as his director of national intelligence.

New policies and pardons from US President Donald Trump. The second Trump administration officially began on Monday and it has been 24 hours of non-stop executive orders coming from the White House - but not only from there. Just hours after he was sworn in for a second term, Trump appeared on stage at a sporting arena in Washington DC filled with his supporters. That is where he signed his first series of executive orders in a piece of political theater merging a Trump rally with his presidential powers. He finished by throwing his pens into the crowd. Later, back in the Oval Office, he signed more orders. They included a sweeping pardon for around 1500 rioters who attacked the US Capitol four years ago, in an unsuccessful attempt to overturn Joe Biden's presidential election victory. A victory that Trump has always publicly refused to accept.

The 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China is currently taking place and Dongsheng will be publishing a series of videos in order to better understand this political event.
China is at the center of the world’s economy and geopolitics, however little is known about its internal politics.
So, what is China’s political system? Is it really a dictatorship like the Western media claims?

For years, good relations with China guaranteed the German economy healthy profits and cheap goods. But over time, that relationship has become a dependency. The documentary "In the Jaws of the Dragon - How to Deal with China?” explores the nature and extent of this reliance.
At a summit meeting to discuss the "New Silk Road” infrastructure project in October 2023, China’s President Xi appeared alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. Whether in Asia or the Middle East - China is evidently pushing for a new world order, with offensives directed against the West. Germany is already feeling the consequences.
For a long time, trade with China flourished: From 1984, Volkswagen flooded the Chinese market with cars, ultimately exporting one in every three VWs to China. But now, Chinese companies like BYD are dominating the market with e-cars. And Germany’s reliance on China for computer chips, antibiotics and solar cells can now be seen as downright reckless. This dependence is becoming more evident as China increasingly comes up trumps both politically and economically. Whether regarding the Ukraine war, in its relations with Russia or its continued saber rattling in the conflict with Taiwan: Where China would have once conducted itself with restraint, it now demands its slice of global power. In Berlin, politicians are rubbing their eyes in disbelief: what was once a healthy relationship is now a codependency. And there’s no easy way out.

From Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s to Xi Jinping today, China’s leaders have long said the country practises a unique type of socialism – “socialism with Chinese characteristics.” Framed as an adaptive, flexible socialism, it’s tailored specifically to China’s conditions and problems. Initially, the phrase meant an embrace of free markets, free enterprise and trade, to reverse the economic stagnation of the Mao Zedong years. However, current leader Xi Jinping has declared the start of a “new era”, requiring a new type of socialism with Chinese characteristics – with the clearest continuity being that the Communist Party remains large and in charge.

Please join the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics for the book launch of Joseph Fewsmith’s Rethinking Chinese Politics. In the book, Fewsmith argues, as in all Leninist systems, political power is difficult to pass on from one leader to the next. Fewsmith traces four decades of elite politics from Deng to Xi, showing how each leader has built power (or not). He shows how the structure of politics in China has set the stage for intense and sometimes violent intra-elite struggles, shaping a hierarchy in which one person tends to dominate, and, ironically, providing for periods of stability between intervals of contention.
Following an initial presentation by author Joseph Fewsmith, Jessica Teets of Middlebury College will offer commentary on the key takeaways of the book. Freeman Chair Jude Blanchette and Trustee Chair Scott Kennedy will co-host and also offer their reactions.

Rory Truex is a professor at Princeton University focusing on Chinese politics and authoritarian regimes. Contrary to popular assumptions, it appears that younger Europeans are getting more rightwing than previous generations, with many expecting to vote for far right parties in upcoming elections. So what exactly is motivating this shift in Gen-Z politics?
